eduroam

What is eduroam?

eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) is a global WLAN roaming infrastructure. It is used both in international research and education community and allows users to log in to eduroam network anywhere in the world using their home organisation's username and password.

eduroam in HIIT

eduroam is the preferred wireless network for HIIT's users.

Users can log in to eduroam using their user credentials. Account syntax in eduroam is always login@example.com. In HIIT's case, replace login with your login and example.com with hiit.fi.

In HIIT's premises you can find eduroam from the following locations

  • Kumpula site (full coverage)
  • Spektri site (1st and 3rd floor OK, 2nd floor coming later)
  • Otaniemi site (full coverage)

Current eduroam coverage in compared to University of Helsinki's Public network (HUPnet) is currently approximately 25%. Please see a list of locations HUPnet or eduroam can be found.

More specific instructions for different operating systems can be found below.

eduroam for organisations related to HIIT

eduroam is an easy alternative for visitors whose home organisation has joined to eduroam confederation. When using eduroam visitors can log into the network using their own username, password and domain. Thus no additional visitor account need to be created.

  • In University of Helsinki, when using
    • Microsoft Windows or Symbian S60 you need to have UH's AD-account and replace domain (example.com) with ad.helsinki.fi.
    • Linux and OS X replace domain (example.com) with helsinki.fi.

More information of eduroam use in other organisations, please consult your home organisations IT-support organisation first and only after that local IT-support organisation.

eduroam security

eduroam uses secure 802.1X which is an IEEE standard for port-based network access control. 802.1X and combined use of 802.11i in wireless networks allow e.g. two users to be in the same room using wireless network (Wi-Fi) and even though they hear each others' traffic they won't be able to understand it because they both have different encryption key for their wireless connection.

A word of caution
Local eduroam- organisation defines access control policy to their IP-address space allocated for eduroam clients. This means that even though the airway is secure, access from the Internet to your computer may be unrestricted. So keep your firewalls tight.
Web-based logins considered insecure
Should you encounter an eduroam- organisation that allows access to eduroam using a web-based login page, please note that eduroam Operation Team has released an announcement discouraging such practice.
